Every material for countertops has its own unique set of characteristics. Part of the fun of any countertop project is deciding which material best fits your design ideas and lifestyle. Here is a short description of what to expect from different materials:

Natural Stone Products — Onyx, Marble, Granite

Because stone is a natural product it is highly varied in coloration and pattern. Even counters cut from the same slab of material can vary greatly in pattern and color. The patterns can also be ‘directional’, which can cause some unsightly affects at seams and corners if not planned properly. Only certain types of natural stone are consistent enough that selections can be made from color samples. Normally, you want to view the entire stone that you are considering for your project. However, if a color sample is appropriate, we can provide samples and suggestions for how to match stone sections for an even, coordinated look to your project.

Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The smaller the pattern, the easier to ‘match’ different slabs for corners, L-shaped sections, etc. Granite is also one of the most popular choices for kitchens because of its hardness, heat resistance, durability, and low maintenance. Popular choices for bars, vanity tops and other countertops are onyx and marble. These stones can have large patterns, such as dramatic swirls, or small patterns, depending on the stone. Also, onyx and marble can be ‘backlit’ so light shines through, or from underneath, the stone. This provides a very striking effect at night.

Quartz Surfacing – Zodiaq, Caesarstone (engineered stone products)

Quartz is both beautiful and very consistent in pattern and color. In addition, some quartz can be ‘backlit’ so light shines through, or from underneath, the stone — a very striking effect. Some color variation can occur from slab to slab. However, it is generally not noticeable. Color samples are generally accurate in color and pattern.

Solid Surface — Corian, Meganite, Gibraltar

Solid Surface is very consistent in color and pattern. Any slight color variation that occurs from slab to slab is generally not noticeable. For making countertop selections, color samples are accurate in color and pattern.

Recycled Glass

Recycled glass is fairly consistent in both color and pattern. The random distribution of glass can cause the appearance of color variation. This is especially true at seams. Depending on the cement used, this can also vary slightly in color. Such variation can be noticeable at seams. Color samples are fairly accurate in color and pattern.

When made from the same batch, concrete is fairly consistent in color and pattern. However, slight variation should be expected from batch to batch and therefore color samples are not an exact representation of the final product.

Quartz Vs Limestone | Countertop Comparison

Quartz Vs Limestone | Countertop Comparison
Quartz and limestone are fairly different materials in terms of composition, style and durability, however, both can be fantastic countertops depending on the given project.

Quartz is one of the best-engineered materials available for countertop projects in areas that are not appropriate for natural stones for one reason or another, whether it be a children’s bathroom, changing room, or business on a budget.

Quartz is an engineered stone, meaning that it is manmade from natural quartz minerals. Slabs of quartz used for countertops contain about 93% crushed quartz combined with about 7% polyester resin, which is a synthetic material. Quartz stones have consistent patterns, and can come in a wide variety of colors, patterns and textures. Since quartz is man-made, it is completely non-porous meaning that the stone will never stain, and the consistent patterns make it easier to hide seams, which is great for large areas. The stone is also highly durable, and is great for high traffic areas. Marble.com carries quartz that is made by a variety of popular companies, such as Caesarstone, Quantra, and Santa Margherita.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcium carbonate. It is known for uniquely having ancient aquatic fossils embedded it as a result of being formed in clear, warm, shallow marine waters. There are many limestone–forming environments around Earth, such as the Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Mexico, around Pacific Ocean islands and within the Indonesian archipelago.

Limestone is slightly softer and more porous than marble, so avoiding areas that experience a high traffic flow, particularly with acidic liquids, is best. Limestone will look fantastic as a bathroom vanity or bath surround because it provides a “beachy” look from impressions left on the stone by aquatic fossils and shells. It typically comes in natural colors such as grey, tan or brown and has a solid overall appearance. Its visual versatility makes it easy to accommodate any design scheme, which makes Limestone is especially perfect for renovations.
